For as long as I can remember, the Star Wars trilogy (the original three) have been some of my favourite movies. Although never strictly the nerdish type, I can remember spending weekends just watching all three, since in my world, trilogy watching means watching all three movies.
Then the trilogy of prequels came out. Now, I’m not a die-hard über fan who can speak Chewbacca or whatever, but even I, at the young age of about 15, was incredibly disappointed with these movies. I can’t say if it was the bad acting, the shitty script-writing, or the stupid characters, but I hated it. Hated. As in, I saw them once and refused to ever watch them again.
And now we’re a little less than two months away from the start of a third trilogy, and I’m beyond excited. I was skeptical at first, and I still am a little, but the closer the date gets, the more excited I get!!
I don’t know much about the new movies, to be honest. I have no idea what they’ll be about, or how big a role the old characters will have, or even what some of the new characters look like! I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the story continue. Return of the Jedi ended on a happy note, but that doesn’t meant that things stayed that way. Shit happens, things change, and heroes are forgotten. And from what I could see in the trailers, shit has happened, things have changed, and heroes have been forgotten. So I would definitely like to see where Luke, Leia, and Han are, as well as get to know the next generation of hopefully kick-ass heroes and villains.
It’s interesting (and weird), being excited about a movie I don’t know much about. Usually I’ve read the book, or I’ve looked up spoilers, or I’ve read a plot summary. But I’m excited to be surprised!! I’m hoping that the movies will kick some major ass while at the same time feeding the nostalgia that we feel for all the characters from the originals.
The only character from the originals that I want to see but have heard nothing of is Lando Calrissian. In an interview with Cinemaline back in February, Billy Dee Williams, Lando’s portayer, hinted that he may be coming back in the next film.
He also makes the excellent point that although many consider him one of the “original” characters, he wasn’t introduced until Empire Strikes Back, the second film. So it is entirely possible they’ll bring him back in the next one. I’ll definitely be keeping my fingers crossed for that!
I definitely plan to watch it on opening night, if I can. I should probably look into that before it sells out. But my friends and I also plan to have a marathon of the original three and then watch VII on the weekend after it opens. I see no reason why I can’t do both!!
Also, check out that picture!! For one of it’s recent stunts, Disney marched out 500 Stormtroopers onto the Great Wall of China. I would so have LOVED to get a picture with them!! They should do something like that here…and by here I mean Toronto. Unlikely, I know, but still. It’d be awesome!!
