It’s a zombie world…

The zombie apocalypse is probably one of the most terrifying, although far-fetched and hopefully impossible, things that could ever happen.  No matter which writer’s or director’s version of zombies you think of, they’re pretty terrifying.  They don’t sleep, they don’t need rest, they can’t be reasoned with.  They’re out for your blood (or brains, whatever), and nothing will stop them.  Total war, as they say.

Of course, most movies use the slow-moving, single-minded, follow-the-food zombie, which is scary, but can thankfully be outrun if you meet just one or two.  Then there’s the fast zombies that can run and climb and swarm and will fuck shit up.  They’re even more terrifying.  And, if that isn’t scary enough, in zombie master’s George A. Romero‘s Land of the Dead, the fourth movie of his Living Dead series, the zombies are actually beginning to think and plan their attacks.

Yes, they scare me. Now, I don’t actually believe that the zombie apocalypse will happen, but that doesn’t make it any less frightening for me.  Like most people, I have always been fascinated by the idea of zombies.  Besides Romero’s work, shows like The Walking Dead and movies like Warm Bodies and 28 Days Later have just fed that fascination.

So this week I decided to go all out and scare myself and watch Brad Pitt‘s World War Z, which I then followed by reading the novel of the same name by Max Brooks.  Not only would I get my fill of zombie shenanigans, but I’d see what the big hype was about on both the movie and the book.

A list of things before I die (a.k.a. my bucket list).

Bucket lists have always interested me. I’ve never really understood why they were called bucket lists, though.  I guess it’s because it’s things you wanna do before you kick the bucket??  Seems a little weird to me, but you know, English is pretty weird that way.  I’ve taken to calling them bucket lists now, though, because it’s what everyone else seems to know them as, and it’s just easier than explaining why you hate the name every time you use it.

Anyways, so I’ve had one made long before I knew what they were called, and even now, I continue to add to it.  I think I was nine years old when I first started writing down the list I’d been keeping in my head for as long as I could remember.  Some items have never changed (hug a panda, see the northern lights, learn to surf), while others have been added as soon as I discovered it was possible to do them or that they existed (swim with sharks, write a book, walk the Skywalk at the Grand Canyon).

Thankfully, I’ve crossed a few off my list: I’ve climbed a volcano, visited Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, camped at Bruce Peninsula National Park, climbed a pyramid (well, technically a ziggurat, but I’m not gonna be picky).

I figured I’d list a few here for you all, in case you need some inspiration.  Of course, there’s other, less photo-friendly items on my list, like write a novel, learn a new language, see a broadway play, spend the night in a haunted house, learn to drive standard, and visit all 50 states.  Plus, you know, ride a hot air balloon, swim with dolphins, go horseback riding, go paragliding, see the Sphinx…. you get the point, I’m sure.

So there you go.  I’m sure I’ll come up with others as time goes by, and hopefully I’ll get to knock some off my list soon.  I’m hoping that within the next year I can go horseback riding and maybe ziplining or skydiving.  I wanted to get cliff jumping out the of the way, but instead I jumped off a high ledge inside a cave, which I’m not sure counts as a cliff.  And next year, a trip for sure.  Maybe Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail??  Maybe Comic Con in San Diego??  Or maybe I’ll just buy a pair of Louboutin leather boots (and/or sparkly stilettos).  I’d so love that!!

What’s on your bucket list??

JK Rowling outed as author of crime novel

jk-rowling-cuckoos-callingAs I’m sure many of you have heard, this weekend it was unearthed that J.K. Rowling, beloved author of the amazing Harry Potter series, had written another book – and no one knew about it!!

Written under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith, the detective tale The Cuckoo’s Calling  had sold a small number of hard cover copies.  And although it had received favourable reviews, it had not hit any best-seller lists and was generally ignored by the public.

Rowling has admitted that she is indeed the writer and that she’d hoped to keep her identity secret for a while longer.

“Being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience,” she said in a statement to the Times.  “It has been wonderful to publish without hype and expectation and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name.”

The book has gone from unnoticed to instant best-seller, and retailers are struggling to meet the demand.  Cuckoo’s publisher, Little Brown, has ordered a second printing of 300,000 copies.

The story follows Cormoran Strike, a war veteran turned private detective investigating the mysterious death of a model who fell from her balcony.  A second book is in the works for 2014, making me hopeful that this is a new series that will have many, many books.

To be honest, I hadn’t heard anything about this book, or this author, before it was discovered Rowling was the real writer.  Having obtained an e-copy, I’m excited to start reading it as soon as I can!!  Of course, I’d like to finish World War Z by Max Brooks first, but as soon as that’s done, I’ll be giving Cuckoo’s a read.  I’ll let you know what I think as soon as I’m done!!

Oh, the obsession…

So to continue on my Supernatural obsession (yes, it’s totally turned into an obsession), I found this video that I wanted to share with you all.  It’s done incredibly well.  It’s all scenes from the 5th season, which, in my opinion, is the best season.  It was an incredibly crazy emotional roller coaster – there were so many hilarious ups and heartbreaking downs, I actually felt my heart tear a little with every new episode.  I honestly don’t think I’ve ever laughed and cried so much, and felt happiness and sadness to such extremes, from any other TV show I’ve watched.  Ever.  And it had the best ending to a season I’ve ever seen.  If they’d ended the show there, I honestly would have felt it was a good place to end, even if it was technically a cliffhanger.  In case you’re interested, watch this one and then this one.  There’s about ten seconds missing between those scenes, but all you miss is Castiel healing Dean.  And honestly, the Chuck part of the ending just added to the awesomeness, I think.

Anyways, this is almost like a trailer for the season, and hopefully you love it as much as I did.  Or, if you don’t watch the show, it’ll get you interested.

Of course, it helps that the song is “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons.  Awesome song!!

And yes, my obsessions has gotten pretty bad.  I think I’m on my fourth viewing of the series (as in, start to finish), and I just can’t seem to stop!!  I’ve also started reading fan fiction and I’m always on the Supernatural Reddit.  I know there’s also a big Tumblr thing for it, but I dislike Tumblr and so haven’t ventured into that yet.

I’ll be writing fan fiction soon too, you’ll see.  Seriously, obsessed.  I’ve also found charms I totally want to buy.  I’ve discovered Etsy (which was a bad, bad thing) and I’ve got like 15 Supernatural-related things I want to buy.  Also, I now want to get an anti-possession tattoo.  Honestly, I’m gonna end up spending a lot of money.  And while the crazy obsessiveness may eventually fade, I know I’ll still love this show years and years down the line.

Anywyas, this video is pretty good too.  It’s got scenes from all the seasons except the current one.  The song used is “Demons,” also by Imagine Dragons.

I’m not gonna lie, that video makes me want to make everyone watch this show, because it reminds me of just how good it is.

I’ll probably write about Supernatural again, because, you know, obsessed.  So give it a watch so you know what I’m talking about, okay?  And if you already watch it, watch it again!!

The One About “Friends”

Friends+castSo recently, I’ve rediscovered Friends.  Now, that’s not to say that I’d forgotten about it, or that I hadn’t been a fan in the first place.  it’s just that so much time had passed and so many new shows had come around that I’d sort of let it gather dust in the corner.

Well, a few weeks ago I decided I was in the mood for some comedy (I know, weird, right??) and I dusted them off and started watching them.

ustv_friends_cast_shotAnd man, had I forgotten how awesome they are or what??  It’s making me happy to revisit the happy (and not so happy) moments of my favourite dysfunctional-and-crazy-yet-loving-and-loyal group of friends.

In case you spent the decade the show was on TV living under a rock, it follows the lives of 20-somethings Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Monica Geller (Coureney Cox), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), and Joey Tribiani (Matt LeBlanc) as they try to make a life for themselves in New York City.

The show lasted for ten season, from 1994 to 2004, and had viewership in the 20 millions each week.

Friends-friends-69087_1024_768On the show, the friends had their ups, their downs, their good relationships, their bad ones.  They were happy and successful.  They had shitty jobs, and were unemployed, and at times had no idea what they were doing with their life.  It’s weird, because I couldn’t really identify with them when the show was on (I was 10 in 1994), but I can now.  Now I can see why it was so funny, or so sad, or so happy, or so heartbreaking.

I can totally understand why it’s hard to let them go.  But yesterday and today have been crazy with rumours and stories about a new season of friends coming in 2014.  Star Media, an outlet I’ve never heard of, seems to have “confirmed” with NBC there will be a new season.  Since I immediately called bullshit, I decided to do some research.

Sadly, that research was not only super easy (way to be gullible, Internet!!) but also sad: there will be no reunion.  In fact, Marta Kauffman, the series creator, has confirmed to E! Online that not only is there no reunion planned, there will never be a reunion.  Never.

It’s sad that it’s not coming back, but honestly, I’d rather have it end the way it did than have to remember a badly done movie where they all try to get the same chemistry they had ten years ago.  It would never work.

But it doesn’t mean I’ll ever stop re-watching them!!  And you shouldn’t either.
